Atwater Residents Attend National Night Out

Thanks to the efforts of Carol Moore and Barry Shapiro, of Friends of Atwater Village (FAV), the evening picnic and gathering at Red Car River Park (at the corner of Glendale Boulevard and Ferncroft) was a success for all. Councilmember Eric Garcetti, of District Thirteen, was there along with local LAPD representatives (including Commanding Officer Northeast Community Division, Captain Morris Smith) and a local District Attorney.

Councilmember Eric Garcetti speaking to local residents about crime reduction.

The willingness to take action and the commitment to take back our neighborhood is strong in our community, as shown by the number of people who showed up. Willie Pogues, of LA Bridges/Aztec Rising, a Gang Intervention Specialist, was there as well, to show his dedication and support for our community.

Local team of LAPD members in attendance.

And as Councilmember Garcetti stated when he addressed the crowd, even though the local crime rate is the lowest it has been in years (since 1956) there is still work to do to continue to remove the on-going graffiti issue and to reduce the number of crimes committed in the Atwater Village neighborhoods. Among the spread of blankets, tiki torches and picnicking residents, Garcetti went around to individuals in the group and listened to what they had to say about their town.

We all want to continue maintaining the neighborhood watch and community safety programs. Keep up the great work Atwater and know the effort is paying off for all of our residents and local businesses!

The evening ended with a beautiful and peaceful drive across the bridge...

A safer bridge at night, thanks the local LAPD and Atwater residents reclaiming their town.

Living in Atwater Village

We are very proud to be a part of such a wonderful and growing community, such as Atwater Village. For those of you who also live here, you know what we are talking about. For those of you who do not live here, you will just have to stop by and discover our neighborhood for yourself.

Atwater village is tucked away near Silverlake and Los Feliz, and flanked by Glendale. Separated from the west by the Los Angeles River and right off the I-5 freeway, we are close to all that is happening in the heart of L.A. The location and price of real estate continues to draw a fairly artistic and hip type of residents. And with the gay boys streaming in from nearby Silverlake, you know the place is on the verge of a significant change.

Look around and you'll already start to see the restoration and upgrading of local shops and restaurants. And we are thrilled to welcome Asia and dtox to the neighborhood! Of course, there is always the draw of Bigfoot Lodge Bar, on Los Feliz Boulevard that also brings in the trendy and fashionable crowd.

It is our hope, along with the hope of many in our small community, that the crime reduction, graffiti removal, and minimizing the nuisance activity continues to improve and make our town safe for residents and visitors alike.

Finally! The building that used to house a buffet restaurant (down the street from the Los Feliz golf course and across the street from Big Foot Lodge) has finally been replaced with a very inspired and creative dining establishment called Asia. They feature an eclectic menu—designed by executive chef Visanu (the creator of Neo-Thai cuisine)—that includes everything from BBQ Pork ribs to innovative Sushi rolls.

The staff is incredibly friendly and make us feel so very welcomed each and every time we visit. They serve only the freshest and most prime meats, fish and vegetables, their dishes are carefully prepared with your health and pleasure in mind.

Our staff is very partial to sitting at the sushi bar and watching Phoebe create fantastic rolls and special plates that keep our mouths watering for more.

Red Car River Park

Where the historic Pacific Electric Railway once entered Atwater Village, is where you will find Red Car River Park.

Mural by artist Rafael Escamilla, with the help of Tom Hinds & Roxanne Salazar.

On July 11, 2005 Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti and Friends of Atwater Village announced "Red Car River Park" with official installation of signage, and in doing so they reclaimed the open space that has historic value. No longer will the area be closed off to local residents by fear or allowed to be tagged by gang members. As part of an ongoing effort to take back our community and make it a safer place to live, local residents and business owners are getting involved and taking action.

The mural was created in October by artist lead Rafael Escamilla, together with contributing artists Tom Hinds
& Roxanne Salazar. The 30 foot by 40 foot mural was commissioned by Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) and
funded with City of Los Angeles’ Board of Public Works Community Beautification Grant, as well as private
donations raised in September 2004 at the LA River Center.

The train used to cross over the LA. River, along the Hyperion Bridge, on it's way to Silverlake and beyond to downtown L.A.

The area is now safer for people to visit and enjoy, thanks to the work of many who are involved with revitalizing our town and making it a more inviting place to experience.

Now locals can enjoy a wonderful walk along the L.A. River.
